About this sight

Located in the south of Dolj, the “St. Nicholas” Monastery of Sadova was initially established by the Craiovesti boyars around 1520, and Matei Basarab built after that on the same place. Legend says that Matei Basarab, who fought the Turks around Bechet, had reached Sadova with his army. After praying to St. Nicholas’ painting, he promised he would build a masonry church, if he won the fight. He did and after becoming the country’s ruler, he began the actual construction. The Church of the Sadova Monastery was consecrated in 1904, in the presence of King Carol.
