Located in the village of Gruita, the “God’s Ascension” church is one of the two epiphany sites in Dolj. As the legend says: “The shepherd Radu fell asleep under some trees in the area and an angel appeared in his sleep and said: You shall build a church!”. At first he carved 40 crosses from tree trunks. The church was built in 1753 and was the main spiritual place of Oltenia for some centuries. After the 1977 earthquake, the church was severely damaged. The thick walls and the miraculous crosses are still inside, crosses that not even the plunderers dare destroy or steal.
