The first proofs of the existence of the old settlement date back to 225. According to an old map of the Roman Empire, a Dacian town called Pelendava used to sit there. The first document mentioning the name of Craiova dates back to 1475.The historical centre includes a range of monuments dating from the 15th and the 18th-19th centuries. Many private houses, along with multiple cultural institutions, museums, administrative buildings and churches. All the old buildings flawlessly combine with the modern style of what is built in the last century.
The historical city centre of Craiova was recently restored with EU funding, which helped it shine once again.
