Welcome to “St. Nicholas” Church!
The medieval church “St. Nicholas” is located in the center of the village of Tsarevets, in the yard of the newly operating church “St. Dimitar”, surrounded by old tombstones from the period of Bulgarian Renaissance.
The legend tells that many years ago, when the Turks destroyed the Orthodox temples, this church was spared. To prove to the Bulgarians that they do not respect the Christian saints, however, the invaders pierced with their swords the eyes of the saints on the mural paintings. Later, the God-loving peasants filled them with wax. So, though defiled, the church “St. Nikolas”continued through the centuries to be the stronghold of the Bulgarian and Christian spirit and nationality.
