About this sight

Welcome to Kapinovski Monastery!

Kapinovski Monastery was founded in 1272 during the reign of Tsar Konstantin Assen-Tih and represents an important religious center. With the fall of Turnovo under Turkish rule, the monastery was burned down. In the XVIIth century the monastery was restored due to the perseverance of the peasants from the neighboring villages. Since the Ottoman authorities did not allow the restoration of the monastery’s activities, people built it at night, and the new monastery buildings were blackened with smoke in order to look old. Kapinovski Monastery was then burned down several times, but it did not cease to function.

In the XIXth century, Kapinovski Monastery was an important religious center and a monastery school was opened there. During the era of the Bulgarian Renaissance, Kapinovski Monastery was one of the educational and revolutionary centers. The monks from the monastery took an active part in the struggles for liberation from the Ottoman rule.

Nowadays Kapinovski Monastery is active and represents a complex including a church, two chapels and residential buildings.
