About this sight

Welcome to Ulpia Oescus!
Near the Danube river, around 22 km from the town of Gulyantsi, lies the ancient city Ulpia Oescus. The Roman town was founded in the Ist century A.D. as the successor of a Thracian settlement. Later on around it was built the camp of the Fifth Macedonian Legion.
The city was in its heyday during the IVth century during the reign of Emperor Constantine the Great from 307 to 337. Ulpia Oescus was destroyed by the Avars in the late VIth century and from X to XIV century another settlement existed over the ruins of the ancient city.
In the period 1947 – 1951, the archeologists discovered a large public building and in one of the rooms they found one of the best Roman colourful mosaics on the territory of Bulgaria. Here you can see also a forum complex, temples of the Capitoline Triad (Jupiter, Juno, Minerva), a large basilica, public buildings, baths, etc.The best seasons to visit are spring and summer.
Come and discover the Ancient Roman city Ulpia Oescus!
